Congo The fifth year medical elective is an exciting opportunity for medical students, but organising an overseas elective can be a long and complicated process.  We at SWOT have collected some useful information to aid you in the months leading up to your elective.

Queens has put together two useful documents relating to the elective:

 Elective Information 08/09

 Clinical Project Information 08/09

All students should be aware that there are a number of travel scholarships available:

  • University Travel Scholarship

  • Faculty Travel Scholarship

  • External Scholarship

  • Field Trip Support Grant

Details of all the above are available in the Electives Room, Faculty Office or via the Faculty website ( http://www.qub.ac.uk/fmhs/news.html )

With regard to the Field Trip Support Grant, this is a non-competitive grant available to all final year students undertaking their clinical elective (whether it is home or overseas). There are three basic steps involved:

  1. Students must complete an application form and submit it to the Faculty Office by Friday, 6th May 2005. Please note late applications will not be accepted.

  2. An assessment form must be completed by the students’ elective supervisor. This form is available in the Faculty Office and should be collected prior to your departure. (To avoid delay it is recommended that you return the completed assessment form to the Faculty Office yourself). The closing date for receipt of assessment forms is Monday, 24 October 2005.

  3. All students are expected to write a short report on their elective. Again, the closing date for receipt of reports is Monday, 24 October 2005. (Please provide as much detail as possible because this information will be filed in the Electives Room as reference material for future students).

  4. When these three steps are completed, the Faculty Office will authorise the payment of the grant.
